SMARTER Brunei B.A.C.A. Gift Centre OPENING

Do you remember Smarter Brunei’s first musical entitled Oddy’s Quest? It was first shown in April of 2011 in Indera Samudra Hall of Empire Hotel and Country Club. It had a sequel entitled Oddy’s Quest, A Journey in Search of a Home shown in February the next year. The musical concert talks about Oddy’s journey searching for a permanent home. In this story line, Oddy represents SMARTER Brunei who is finding permanent facility for individuals with autism. A place where they can show their talent, skills and productivity. It all started when our Sengkurong ASD Centre moved to its permanent haven in Mata- Mata in May 2015. Their name changed to SMARTER EDGE as this newly found sanctuary provides Early Development, Growth, and Empower/Enabling individuals with autism. We are very blessed to be given an opportunity by the Ministry of Health to use their bungalow and land and some generous sponsors to have our own purpose built centre to cater for all our children’s needs. Just last year (September 2016) when we had a surprised visit from Minister of Health as we were requesting for a permanent facility for our Adult with Autism. As you know, SMARTER Brunei is facing high COST (challenges, obstacles, setbacks and threats) in operating the centres and the immediate solution is CASH and one of the challenges has been answered after he had a look in our centre in Jangsak and saw our programmes. From there, he had a clue of what infrastructure we require for all our programmes to run smoothly. He offered us to use the old Sungai Hanching Clinic in Jalan Muara Sungai Hanching. We are so thankful as we know that this will help us greatly in terms of developing more programmes for our Adults with Autism. In December 2016, we started moving all our things to our new home in Sungai Hanching. It took us, truckloads of things, days and nights of reorganizing all the areas like the bakery, the 3R porta cabin, building a place for shop assistant, rebuilding the swimming pool, updating and upgrading teaching materials in the classroom. And now, we can say that we have our own permanent home to develop programmes as well as our Adults with Autism to be a (CHIPs) Contributing, Holistic, Interdependent and Productive members of the society. We can now say that our musical concert, “Oddy’s Quest, a Journey in Search of a Home” has a beautiful ending. Smarter Brunei indeed found its permanent home. As this was the ending of Oddy’s Quest II, it will be a beautiful beginning for all our Adults with Autism as they are starting to settle with their new home. We are now making continuous improvements in infrastructure and continuously providing excellent service and programmes for our individuals with autism. The BACA GIFT Centre Official Launching will be on the 8th January 2018.

SMARTER conducted CPR/AED training for all staff

The First Aid and CPR Training Course conducted to all the Therapists was very informative and beneficial. It was fun and at the same time, felt good and rewarding to have the opportunity to be trained of this very serious and life-saving skill. As a registered nurse, this is something that I take very seriously career-wise. I am very happy that we were given this opportunity in SMARTER Brunei. It is also confident boosting to be trained of this very important skill, in which we can apply as a therapist; given that some of our students have cases of seizures. Most importantly, it is very fulfilling to be able to help, not only by teaching but also in saving lives. Truly, SMARTER is true to its words in promoting SAFETY first above all else. Teacher Pau, Volunteer Therapist in BACA Eight (8) staff will be sent to the National Resuscitation Centre, Ong Sum Ping to undergo Instructor Course for 2 days.
